Kansas City Chiefs lost at home and are left without their star player.

Kansas City Chiefs are having their worst season since Patrick Mahomes arrived. The Missouri team had been struggling this season, relying heavily on the brilliance of their quarterback, who had to carry the offense. Neither Travis Kelce nor JuJu Smith-Schuster performed well, becoming a burden for Mahomes.

The defense was also a disaster throughout 2025, and their hopes of returning to a fourth consecutive Super Bowl were dashed. On Sunday, they faced a direct rival from the AFC West: the Los Angeles Chargers. There was no room for error; they had to win at all costs to try and salvage a season that had been doomed for weeks.

At Arrowhead Stadium, the Chargers prevailed 16-13, effectively burying the Chiefs. Additionally, some results that seemed impossible did happen. The Buffalo Bills rallied from a 21-0 deficit against the New England Patriots to win 35-31. The Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars crushed the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets, 40-20 and 48-20, respectively.

During the fourth quarter, in a tight and very difficult game, Patrick Mahomes took a hard hit and, when he planted his left leg, made an awkward movement. His knee was injured, and he was unable to continue playing. The team revealed that his injury is a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This serious injury will keep him sidelined, ending what has been a forgettable season for the team.

Gardner Minshew will take over at the helm for the remaining three weeks. Their next game will be a slightly easier test, as they face the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium. Then, on Thursday, December 25, they have a tough Christmas Day game against the Denver Broncos, the leaders of the AFC West, their own division. Finally, they will close out the season at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas against the Raiders.
